Interview with Hayley

Engineer – UK
[Hayley]
I’m Hayley. I’m a graduate petroleum engineer, currently a drilling engineer in the North Sea.
Close-up footage of Hayley speaking into the camera, seen against the background of an office interior. Low angle footage of a helicopter in the air, rotor blades turning against a deep blue sky. Bird’s eye view of one of the concrete-legged Brent platforms in the North Sea, seen below a cloudy blue sky.
[Hayley]
I’m passionate about what I do. I loved Maths. I love Physics. I love rocks and the world around me.
Close-up of the wheels/landing gear of a helicopter as it lands on a helideck; in the background, we see an oil platform at some distance. Close-up footage of Hayley speaking into the camera, as before.
[Hayley]
I was at a university fair and I saw Shell actually presenting about the energy transition and new energy ventures. I thought it was brilliant.
Close-up selfie footage of Hayley, wearing Shell safety gear and standing on an oil platform, looking into the camera; blue seas and sky forms the background. High-angle shaky-cam footage of a helideck on an oil platform, with blue sea and sky forming the background. Close-up footage of Hayley speaking into the camera, as before. Close-up of a hand plugging the charging plug into a vehicle’s socket; white line animated graphics and text appear onscreen at frame right, alongside the charging socket, to indicate the charging battery. High angle side view of an FPSO moving though the ocean as the sun sets in a pink-hued sky. This cuts to a circling bird’s eye view of the FPSO and we catch a glimpse of the moon in the pink-hued sky.
[Hayley]
It probably comes back to when I did some humanitarian work in Honduras and also in Ghana, and I was providing energy access for people.
Animated graphic of a control-line model aircraft, together with control line and handle, seen against cloudy blue skies. This cuts to low-angle footage of a control-line aircraft, with attached control line, seen moving across a pale, cloudy blue sky. Close-up profile-view footage of Hayley speaking into the first camera, cutting to archival footage of Hayley carrying a young child at a rural homestead; as she looks around and points, the camera pans across in the direction she is pointing.
[Hayley]
It’s day one of building here; it’s quite backbreaking work.
Archival footage of Hayley speaking into the camera, seen against the background of the rural homestead, briefly cutting to footage of her team shovelling sand and mixing cement nearby, before the shot returns to Hayley as she speaks into the camera.
[Hayley]
And I saw the impact it had on families, on children, the smiles, the positivity.
Close-up profile-view footage of Hayley speaking into the first camera. We transition into and out of a still shot of Hayley and a child she is carrying posing against a background of pale sky. Next, more archival footage of Hayley and a member of her team seated atop a ladder next to the wall of a rural house; other team members pass an item to them which they transfer to the tin roof of the rural home.
[Hayley]
If we want our planet to be there for our grandchildren, I think we need to be risky.
Again, we transition into and out of a still shot of Hayley and a local member of the community smiling for the camera. Close-up footage of Hayley speaking into the camera, as before.
[Hayley]
Every day that I’m working offshore, we are involved in actually trying to reduce our carbon footprint.
Medium footage of Hayley seated at a table, pen in hand, a book open in front of her; she looks thoughtfully out through the window in the background. We cut to a low-angle close-up of Hayley as she turns her attention back to the book in front of her. Next, we see a close-up of her hand holding the pen and writing in the book. Close-up footage of Hayley speaking into the camera, as before.
[Hayley]
It’s about changing that landscape, it’s about protecting our planet, it’s about the quality of people’s lives. There was no other option for me.
We see portrait selfie footage of Hayley, wearing her Shell safety gear and looking down into the mobile phone’s camera, with white borders either side of the footage. Panning aerial footage moving through mist and over the tops of trees in a green, forested area. Low-angle footage of the sun breaking through green foliage in a forested area.
[Hayley]
We can meet this challenge, and we will, I think, yeah.
Night-time footage, seen through glass, of Hayley and other young Shell employees socialising. This cuts to a low-angle close-up of Hayley speaking, surrounded by her colleagues.
[Hayley]
It’s just great to know that I’m part of a team and I don’t have to do this journey on my own.
Medium footage of Hayley and her colleagues gathered around a cocktail table, having drinks and socialising, cutting back to a low-angle close-up of Hayley as she laughs. Close-up profile-view footage of Hayley speaking into the first camera. We dissolve to a white background.
